If you’re anything like me, you’ll have already started looking for your New Year’s Eve outfit.
After the long-awaited Great Gatsby film was released this summer, high street designers and couture houses alike started to take inspiration from the roaring twenties, and in the run up to the festive season the high street has become overrun with beautiful beaded dresses, skirts and tops in the classic flapper style.
My guess is that this New Year’s Eve, Gatsby will be the name on everyone’s lips as party hosts and hostesses everywhere try to emulate the infamous and extravagant soirées held in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s fictional world.
Whether you’re going to a themed party or not, Jazz Age style is always a winner for any evening occasion. I’ve done the hard work for you, and found some gorgeous dresses and accessories to help you sparkle all night as you bring in the new year!
This little cream number is more fitted than most flapper-style dresses, and will provide a flattering silhouette as well as a bit of sparkle. Embellished Dress by TFNC at Topshop, £69.00
This is a little black dress with a difference. Black flapper embellished dress from Miss Selfridge, £95.00
For Jazz Age patterning without the formal look of an embellished flapper dress, this mid-length black number is perfect for a more casual NYE event. ASOS Midi Dress, currently on sale for £30.00!
Another dress with more subtle sparkle, this body-hugging dress will show off all your curves, whilst the embellishment will help to hide any curves you might not want to show off. Frock and Frill Slinky Dress, on sale for £80.50
If you’re going all out this NYE and need something for a much more formal gathering, this full length dress is perfect. The sheer overlay allows you to show a little subtle skin, and the beading keeps with the Gatsby theme. Miss Selfridge Bead Body Maxi Dress, £89.00
This dress is perfect for a NYE dinner as the loose style gives you breathing room, just in case your eyes were bigger than your belly (which mine usually are…) Frock and Frill Tiered Cami Dress, currently down to £94.50
Dresses as glittery as these need simple accessories to complement rather than add to the sparkle. When it comes to shoes and bags, pick a colour from your outfit and stick to it to avoid having too many colours and patterns at once.
Although chunky heels are very on trend at the moment, this outfit needs a more delicate approach. These Cream Platform Court Shoes from New Look are perfect, and a bargain at £24.99. New Look also have a range of court shoes in different colours.
If you’re like me and find that your feet flop out of court shoes, then try a pair of these ‘barely there’ stilettos from River Island, £45.00
Or if ‘barely there’ isn’t your thing, these platform peep toes keep it simple and sexy. Cross Strap Peep Toes from River Island, on sale for £35.00!
And for those who prefer a lower heel, these little beauties will keep you dancing all night long. Pointed heels from ASOS, £25.00
Just like your shoes, keeping your bag simple is important too. Again, use the colours in your outfit to help coordinate everything together for a chic look. This tassel clutch from Accessorize, £17.00, is plain and yet stylish.
Bags with detail work better with dresses that have the same coloured beading and material. This cut out bag from New Look would work perfectly with a black beaded flapper dress. £19.99
Beautiful sparkling jewels were all the rage in the twenties. For those who can’t afford the current Gatsby inspired collection by Tiffany (who also did the jewels for the film), here are some high street pieces.
This faceted jet necklace from Accessorize is typical of Jazz Age style. £14.00
Bejewelled headbands are the perfect accompaniment to a gorgeous flapper dress. This delicate petal headband from ASOS is a bargain at £10.00
High street shops are full of 1920s style earrings, from sweet little studs to huge chandelier-like monstrosities. These earrings from Accessorize sit nicely in the middle. £8.00
And for those who want to take the Gatsby look even further, why not dress up your nails, Jazz Age style? This Buzzfeed post provides some great inspiration.
Complete your Great Gatsby inspired look with 1920s hair and makeup. This tutorial by Michelle Phan shows you how to create a gorgeous makeup look with ease.
And if you really want to go all out, roaring twenties style, try a faux bob. This photo is a few years old now, but I dressed as Velma Kelly from the musical Chicago for a fancy dress party, and my faux bob lasted all night! Here’s a quick how-to guide from Cosmopolitan.
So put on your dress, grab a drink, and party like it’s 1922…
